Do you give a crack addict more crack?

Hi folks, back on the grid after an amazing trip to Kings Canyon. It appears as if the federal government can do somethings right (shocker) such as preserve our beautiful open spaces. Let us hope that this mentality continues for ALL generations. For example, if I lived in Fresno and hated traffic (as we all do) I would NOT BE in favor of a TOLL ROAD because of the negative impact for future generations. It is extremely selfish for this generation to complain about traffic and want to build more toll roads to alleviate traffic while ignoring the increasing population of our future. I want to use this blog to give Paul credit for his long-range views on the current problems that America has to deal with. It is easy to only think in the short term and to look out for yourself. We all want cheaper gas and love our cars but what price are we willing to pay? How does drilling in our preserves (that McCain voted for) solve our problems for future generations? The fact is that the majority of Americans have become addict to the easy solution for all our problems and hide behind fake patriotism (flag pins) for their reliance on easy solutions. We need long-term thinking in this country and Obama is the man to do it. We all love our country and need to realize that we

OK Garrett, please tell us why we need another hit?

Here's something to think about. Anybody who's been over to another western developed country in the last few decades would of noticed something. They've always had gas over $5/gallon! How could that be when our gas was about $1.50 in the '90s?

Their governments and people(they have democracies) decided that they didn't want to build their society on cheap oil, so they put on a $4-5 tax on a gallon of gas and used that money to develop effecient transit and communities that are compact and low on energy consumption. So their own money went back into their own towns. We laughed at how "gay" they looked in their little cars or vespas. I know, I was one of them driving a 454 big block GMC getting 9 mpg.

Now in America, high gas is going to force us to rethink where we live, what we drive, and our energy use as a community. Since we didn't want to adjust earlier, instead of reinvesting our $5/gal gas in our own communities through tax, it ALL goes to foreign countries. Welcome to rehab.

Supporting mass transit just makes sense! We need to put more money into developing subways, more metro trains and more lanes for those who carpool. It will also take a real commitment on the part of big business and automakers to allow more telecommuting and to build alternate fuel vehicles. I am going to make a commitment to try the metro train which is within one to one and a half miles walking distance from our home. Who wants to join me? It takes the rich and the poor and the in-between to make this work.
Love, Denise
